EUGENE, Ore. - For member of the Arkansas Razorback track and field team,
Tyson Gay, won the 100 meters on day three of the U.S. Olympic Trials at
Oregon's Hayward Field on Sunday.
Gay clocked a wind-aided (4.1 m/s) 9.68, the fastest time ever run
in the 100 meters in any conditions. He also punched his ticket to the
Beijing Olympics. In Sunday's quarterfinals, Gay set a new American record
with his wind-legal time of 9.77.
In the 100-meter semifinals Sunday afternoon, there was good news
and bad news for Gay and former teammate Wallace Spearmon. Gay easily won
his heat with a time of 9.85 to advance to the finals. Spearmon finished
fifth in his heat, with a time of 10.18, and was the first runner in his
heat to be left out of the final.
Spearmon and Gay will return to the track Friday, July 4, for the qualifying
rounds of the 200 meters.
