Cayman Islands Marathon Set For December

New York, New York July 2, 2008 – Elite competitors and weekend joggers alike will participate in the 2008 Cayman Islands Marathon on Sunday, December 7. Hugging the coastline from iconic George Town through the south side of Grand Cayman and back, runners will be able to enjoy the flat course while taking in the beautiful scenery of the Caribbean’s premiere destination.

The event, which benefits the Cayman Islands Cancer Society and the Cayman Islands Cadet Corps, is in its sixth year and offers entrants four different ways to run the race: the full 26.2 mile marathon, the half 13.1 mile marathon, the four-person team relay and the Kids Fun Run. The marathon and half-marathon will begin at 5:00 AM with the Kids Fun Run starting at 9:30 AM.

Located only an hour plane ride south of Miami, the Cayman Islands is the ideal location for a winter marathon. Temperatures are in the mid-70s on average and the course’s path along the coast ensures a flat and fast race for participants. The course is IAAF-certified and a qualifier for the competitive Boston Marathon.

All runners will receive a number of goodies upon entrance, including an official T-Shirt, runner’s “baggie” and access to a post-race food & refreshments area for runners only. Marathon, half marathon and relay finishers will also receive a certificate of completion and a commemorative medal featuring the famous turtle for which Cayman is known for. Perhaps most fun is the ‘carb-loading’ party the night before the race where participants get to meet each other and enjoy a great meal in George Town.

In addition to running, participants and their friends and family will be able to enjoy the unique activities and amusements the Cayman Islands has to offer. From scuba diving in Cayman’s crystal-clear waters to coming face-to-face with stingrays at Stingray City to experiencing the lush foliage of the Queen Elizabeth II Botanic Park, there’s fun for everyone. Another event not to be missed during marathon weekend is Cayman jazz fest, an annual fete featuring the music and magic of some of the world’s most renowned jazz and R&B performers under the Caymanian stars outside on the beach.
